Riksten is a beautiful area with a long history. This part of Sörmland, which thousands of years ago was a sea bay with islands, is a beautiful place with a long history. Excavation work in Riksten Friluftsstad has found settlements that can be dated back to the Stone Age, 10 000 to 4000 BC and there are also remains from the Bronze and Iron Ages, including a runestone at Hamra Gård. You can walk around Rikstens gård in the knowledge that it was a grave-field in the Viking Age.
More modern history has been characterised by aviation. Between the end of the 1940s and 2004 there were both military and civilian airline operations at Riksten as a result of the F18 (former military airbase), which was closed down in 1985. The construction of homes, school and preschool on the old airfield marks the beginning of a new era.
